여기 12집에 수록된 칸타타들은 바흐가 라이프찌히에서 토마스칸토르로 재직할 당시의 제2기 작품들로서 1725년 이전 작품들에 비해 훨씬 스타일과 내용, 통일성에 있어서 루터교 찬송가의 영향으로 사뭇 다른 형식을 갖추고 있다는 것이 특징이다. 특히 코랄이 앞뒤에 위치하고 레치타티보와 아리아에서 변형을 하고 있다는 점이 그러하다.
